This report presents the redevelopment of the outdoor learning environment at StartBright Deansrath, with a particular focus on inclusion, children’s lived experiences, and the importance of community voice. It documents how an initially underutilised outdoor space was reimagined into a rich, accessible environment designed to support meaningful participation for all children.
A central feature of the project was the active involvement of families in shaping the design. Parental feedback highlighted the need for accessibility, opportunities for challenge, connection with nature, and spaces that respond to different social and emotional needs. This collaborative approach ensured that the environment reflects the diverse identities, abilities, and interests of the children who use it.
The redesigned garden incorporates features such as ramps, wide pathways, varied seating, and planting areas, enabling children to engage in multiple ways. It provides opportunities for active play, quiet reflection, exploration, and interaction with natural elements. The report highlights how this environment supports children to make choices, take initiative, and engage with others, fostering confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.
